At 11:42 AM MST I was able to start downloading Windows XP Service Pack 2 from Microsoft's download center.

I got a voice mail today, "My name is Bob, I don't have a phone at my desk. My laptop died, I'm upstairs please come help me." Boc ended up having to come to my desk to get help as there is no way in hell I could locate him based on his message.

I installed SP2 on a test machine so I could get the group policy templates. The templates get imported into Group Policy Manager to provide the ability to administrate the Windows Firewall that Service Pack 2 installs and enables by default.

I had to install SP2 on my PC so that I can administrate the new group policy settings for SP2. So far no issues, but then I have a pretty plain setup. I don't normally use Internet Explorer, but I did try the updated version that SP2 installed and the pop-up blocker worked in my one test.

I'm seeing some articles about when to deploy Service Pack 2 for Windows XP Pro. I'm not in a rush to add it to the update server so that all the PC in the work environment get updated. I know a few users out there will put it on their laptops as soon as they know about it. I figure let them be testers for a day or two. The developers do not seem concerned at all. Me I have it on two machines and so far have zero issues and really don't expect any with any of my tools etc. I do need to do some work to test things for remote users to see if I need to put a "How To" document together for them.

The sister company office down the street has a timekeeping system running on Windows 95 that used to use a public atomic clock to keep it's time accurate. Well the NTP protocol is now blocked by the firewall so the time has been drifting. I found Automachron 5.001 which will sync time with one of my Windows 2000 servers which is an Active Directory Domain Controller which syncs to a public atomic clock through a custom rule on the firewall.

We have a nice relaxing weekend planned which so far has me more relaxed already just thinking about it.

People can say all they want about Microsoft, an how Linux on the desktop is better, worse what ever. It is all opinion. I can say for myself that as a support person I like WinXP pro cause it gives me some tools I never had in the Windows 98 days which is only just ending here at work. I like being able to use Remote Desktop, Remote Assistance, and administrative shares to do a variety of tasks faster and with improved client satisfaction. Ya I could do these things with Linux, but my employer is in love with things Microsoft so I use the tools I have at hand.
