Taking a peek at GroupWise Document Management Services tonight. This system allows for the creation, editing, sharing, viewing, checking in and out of documents. All documents and their versions created using GroupWise DMS are stored in a binary large objects (blobs). Blobs are both encrypted and compressed. The database of blobs can be either stored at the post office which means that they cannot be moved to a document storage area and can also lead to storage problems when the volume of documents outgrows grows the volume they are stored on. The best solution is to create document storage area, which are easy to manage and move around as required by storage needs.

I made a new library with a document storage area on my data drive. I had to synchronize the NDS tree for the new library to show up in the GroupWise client. I am not sure if I got all the steps right but I do have the new document storage area working. I'll have to do some more experimenting later in the week.

No time for GroupWise tonight. Lots of job postings to weed through, resumes to send out, and emails to compose. Likely more of the same tomorrow, if my hunch is correct.

Can't believe it is already past 11 P.M. This is definitely one of those days that requires more than 24 hours.

I put my emails on the back burner for the moment to take a look at setting up my GroupWise server with internet access. First I need to get my server configured so it can see the internet. So I need to find where I have to configure the default gateway setting so it will use my router. I can Ping my router from the server but cannot ping anything out on the internet.

I already found out that I need a resolve.cfg file placed at \\sys\etc to point the sever towards my ISP and it's DNS server(s) for name resolution.

Example RESOLV.CFG File

domain.foo.com

nameserver 151.155.111.11

nameserver 151.155.111.12

nameserver 151.155.111.13

I found that I have to modify the bind statement in the autoexec.nct file to include gateway = {router IP address}. This will point the server towards the router, which will allow the server to communicate with the internet. Next I have to run the bind command a the command line to initiate the changes.

Example bind statement

bind ip ngrpci_1_eii addr=10.0.0.20 mask=255.255.0.0 gateway=10.0.0.1

I have to wait though to make these changes as with all the services I am running, my server is not always responding well to command line changes. Strange though that mail messages process properly, and file services run well, but the command line is very sluggish. I exited NWconfig and hour ago and I am still waiting for the utility to close properly, and the command prompt will not respond. I'll leave it till tomorrow. If things don't clear-up on their own I may have to reboot the server.

Well while my Netware server continued to operate normally from an end user point of view, from an administrator point of view it fell on its face. Console access has been nil since last night which is not good. So I powered it down then up again, then changed the autoexec.ncf file so that the java console will not load at boot time. I almost never use the java console so it is just eating up resources and not providing any value.

The bind statement changes and resolv.cfg file I setup have done their jobs. From the server I can now ping both IP addresses and fully distinguished names on the internet.

Now time to look in to configuration options for GroupWise Internet Gateway before I install it.

When I fired my server up again yesterday, the GroupWise Post Office did not startup due to an error when trying to locate a document in DMS. I ignored the problem as I could still send and receive mail without the Post Office, as mail in small LAN like mine all goes through the Message Transfer Agent.

In the GroupWise client I found a document which could not be previewed. I assumed that this is the document the Post Office is complaining about, so I deleted the reference to the document from the document folder in the GroupWise client. I then restarted the GroupWise service and all when well except the MTA started a second time. I am not sure if this is normal behavior but I don't see any reason to have the MTA running twice. So I shut down the second and newest instance of it. If I knew of a way to just stat the Post Office on it's own that is what I would have done. I need to dig into this product some more.

Finally got around to ordering a GroupWise book from Amazon. Hopefully it will ship on time so I can have it for later next week.

Saturday May 13, 2000

It's a bright sunny morning here in Calgary. Most of the snow accumulation from the past week is now gone due to yesterday being sunny and breezy.

Lots to do today with preparation s for a house guest next weekend. The guest room is ready, but I need to get some extra groceries etc.

GroupWise is eluding me. Even with the MTA and PO unloaded, email can be sent and received. To figure out how this beast works I started with the Autoexec.ncf file and started back tracking configuration files to try and learn what is being loaded etc. Can’t say I am making much headway, but I’m trying.
